Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition features a rich variety of medicinal plants used for centuries. Sri Lanka has a rich tradition of Ayurvedic medicine, drawing on its indigenous knowledge and a variety of medicinal plants. Here are some notable Ayurvedic medicinal plants found in Sri Lanka:
Brugmansia suaveolens
Brugmansia suaveolens, or Angel's Trumpet, is a stunning tropical plant known for its large, trumpet-shaped flowers. Native to South America, it is often grown as an ornamental shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 6 to 20 feet. The flowers, which can be white, yellow, pink, or peach, emit a strong, sweet fragrance, especially at night, attracting pollinators like moths.
While beautiful, Brugmansia is highly toxic. All parts of the plant contain alkaloids such as scopolamine and atropine, which can cause hallucinations, paralysis, or death if ingested. Historically, indigenous cultures used it in shamanic rituals for its psychoactive properties, though today it is handled with caution.
In the garden, Brugmansia thrives in warm climates with well-draining soil and regular watering. It requires ample sunlight and benefits from pruning, though gloves should be worn when handling the plant. It is also easy to propagate through cuttings, making it popular among gardeners. However, in some regions, it can become invasive due to its rapid growth.
With proper care and attention to safety, Brugmansia adds an exotic and fragrant touch to any landscape.
